Kotter's view on Leading Change.

Since he joined Harvard Business School more than 50 years ago, Dr. John Kotter’s research into change management and leadership has led the field when it comes to building adaptable organisations that are capable of successful transformation – especially during uncertain times. While Kotter’s methodology has been proven as the most successful approach to change decade after decade, the Kotter firm has continued active research to update and evolve the practice to meet today’s pace of change.

One of the Kotter clients made the following important comment: Others change management models is a process, whereas Kotter is all about change capability and behaviors, making people actually do things differently – and stick with it.

Mindpeace Consulting uses different methodologies including the Kotter way to manage change as the baseline when assisting organisations to manage their changes as effectively as possible.

Introduction to Kotter’s way of leading change – The Science of Change?

Kotter’s award-winning methodology is the proven approach to producing lasting change.

Why do some organisations outperform others? Why do some individual managers and executives produce so much more? What allows individuals and enterprises to sustain high levels of performance over time?

These questions have fueled the career-spanning research that has made Dr. John Kotter the world’s foremost change expert. Everything we do is grounded in his academic work and honed in the field alongside our partners.

Kotter’s evolving research is founded on a deeper understanding of:

  • Effective strategies, principles, and tactics to lead complex change.
  • The limitations of traditional organization structures.
  • Human nature and our response to threats and opportunities.

Survive + Thrive

The Human Hardwired Response to Change.

Evolution has resulted in a two-channel system – Survive and Thrive – which influences how we respond to threats and opportunities.

Most people tend to seriously underestimate the power of our built-in survival instinct and how it can, inadvertently, overwhelm our capacity to see opportunities, innovate, adapt, lead, and change for the better.

Limitations of the Modern Organisational Structure.

Dr. John Kotter and Dan Cohen in The Heart of Change made the following statement: “the core of the matter is always about changing the behaviour of people, and behaviour change happens in highly successful situations mostly by speaking to people’s feelings. This is true even in organisations that are very focused on analysis and quantitative measurement, even among people who think of themselves as smart in an MBA sense. In highly successful change efforts people find ways to help others see problems or solutions in ways that influence emotions, not just thoughts.

As indicated in the diagram above, the traditional organisational structure could limit the agility, adaptability and speed that is needed during organisational changes. The Kotter approach recognize the need for both the traditional organisational structure, but also the adaptability that is needed during change.

The above is addressed in Kotter’s 8 Accelerators.
